Besides photography, another hobby that I have is keeping an aquarium. This is my latest project and I have to say, it’s the best one I’ve done so far.
It’s always special every time I work on my aquarium. After all the planning, setting-up, and “aquascaping”, I always have a smile on my face when its all done. There’s always a sense of tranquility every time you take a step back to look at your creation. Especially when you see all the fishes happily swimming around their new habitat.
There are similarities with photography though. The final layout is based on your composition. It’s like a taking a group picture. But the main subjects here are not the fishes. It’s actually the rocks and driftwoods! When you’re putting in the rocks and driftwoods, the rule-of-thirds is generally followed. You may also need to position and re-position your subject so that it all fits into the frame. And once you’re happy with the layout, you fill in the water and then the fishes. The end result is a moving 3-D photograph framed in glass!
That’s why for me, this is my stress therapy… just like photography.
