As the headline suggests, Nikon recently announced its newest flash unit, the SB-910.
On paper, it is practically the same as its predecessor, the SB-900. However, SB-910 promised a better heat management system that slows down the recycling time; instead of shutting down the unit completely to avoid overheating.
During a recent shoot, i have used one, two, and even three SB-900’s. It was a bit frustrating when one of the flash unit keeps shutting down. We had to wait for it to cool down; about 7-12 mins before we could resume. Even then, I can only manage to fire about 2-5 times before it shuts down again.
On the field, it is absolutely crucial to have reliable equipment. No matter how much planning and preparation you put in, there are times when the equipment fails. But I guess I was also pushing the unit too much. I was trying to get the shots that I need in a small window of time, in low-light conditions. Hopefully, the new SB-910 can cope with the demands in similar situations.
